The opera « Aida, » one of the major productions of the State Opera and Ballet, was presented to art lovers in all of its magnificence at the Congresium Stage for the first time in the capital Ankara on Oct. 19, 2019.

The opera « Aida, » which is about the impossible love of the brave commander Radames and the captive Abyssinian Princess Aida, was staged at the Ancient Theatre of Aspendos last month. “Aida,” which has gone down in history as the « most beautiful opera » by Giuseppe Verdi, the famous Italian composer from the 19th Century School of Italian Opera, captivated audiences with its magnificent decor and costumes at the Congresium Stage in Ankara for the first time.

Directed by famous Italian director Vincenzo Grisostomi Travaglini, “Aida” received great acclaim from the audience at the Ancient Theatre of Aspendos. That time, it was performed by the cast of the Ankara State Opera and Ballet with magnificent decor and costumes.

In turn, Feryal Türkoğlu, Nurdan Küçükekmekçi and Burçin Savıgne took on the role of “Aida,” Murat Karahan, Efe Kışlalı and Koray Damcıoğlu will play « Radames, » Ferda Yetişer, Ezgi Karakaya and Zeliha Kökçek will play « Amneris,” and Eralp Kıyıcı and Gürgan Gürgen took on the role of « Amonasro.” Again, alternately, the artists of the Ankara State Opera and Ballet Orchestra, under the direction of conductor Antonio Pirolli and conductor Can Okan, accompanied the performers.

At the Congresium on the evening of Oct. 19, art lovers had the opportunity to watch the « Radames » performance of “Aida” staged by State Opera and Ballet’s general manager and general art director, tenor Murat Karahan, at Italy’s historical Arena Di Verona and Antalya’s Ancient Theatre of Aspendos last summer. Feryal Türkoğlu sang “Aida” in the show.

The decor for the work was designed by Özgür Usta, the costumes by Savaş Camgöz and Gürcan Kubilay, and the lighting by Giovanni Pirandello; the choir was led by Giampaolo Vessella. Sergei Terechenko choreographed the production, which also featured ballet and children’s ballet performers from Ankara State Opera and Ballet.

Last but not least, grateful thanks to General Director Murat Karahan who wished fom the bottom of his heart the return of the grand operas in Turkey and gave the right means to achieve this important decision.

On Friday 12th and Saturday 13th October 2019 evenings, hundreds of people from all nationalities laughed and cried and gave big rounds of applause in Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra’s ballroom where an Italian opera performed, under the direction of Masetro Vincenzo Grisostomi Travaglini.

Kicking off the second Sofitel Phokeethra Classical Music Festival, Pagliacci, an Italian opera by Ruggero Leoncavallo, a tale of romantic entanglements, was organised by Cambodia Opera Project.

According to HRH Prince Ravivaddhana Monipong Sisowath, the Artistic Supervisor of the performance, the concert was a “melting pot” with artists from Cambodia, Japan, Italy, Cameroon, France and Germany.

A group of acrobats from Phare Ponleu Phare Ponleu Selpak also featured on stage. “We decided to perform Pagliacci, which is deliberate and putting together fiction and reality,” said the Prince. “We have artists performing on the stage for the ‘villagers’ in their village.”

The first and only time that the Villa Torlonia theater hosted a public performance was in 1905. Today, after a complex restoration work funded by Roma Capitale, with the contribution of Italian tire company Pirelli, this architectural gem is finally returned to the city. The renovation work has transformed the complex into a space that works as both museum and theater.
A theater to visit and admire then, and to experience through theatrical residencies, meetings, performances and workshops.

The history of the Villa Torlonia theater dates back to 1841, when it was commissioned by Prince Alessandro Torlonia to celebrate his marriage to Teresa Colonna. In addition to scenic areas, side rooms for entertaining guests were built during private parties hosted by the prince. The architect Quintiliano Raimondi mirrored the eclectic taste of the time, with the mix of classic and stately elements, as well as Nordic, Gothic, Moorish and Greek ones. Almost all of the decorations of the theater were built by Constantine Brumidi, an artist who was little-known in Italy, but was famous in the United States where he frescoed the Capitol in Washington, earning him the nickname of « Michelangelo of America. »

On this windy evening of Ash Wednesday 26th February 2020, Luca Lione, a young and talented pianist whom I met some years ago in Sicily, invited us to attend his concert of romantic music.

The programme of his concert was very ambitious, either in the research of the quality or the virtuosity of the pianist himself !

Luca was just wonderfully expressive and his way of playing the piano renders his enthusiasm for music, the strength of his youth and the beauty of music. His Maestro, Vincenzo Marrone d’Alberti was so proud of him. Together with him, were Marquis Vincenzo Grisostomi Travaglini and Prince Giuseppe Grifeo di Partanna to congratulate very warmly our young artist.

Wishing all the best for the future of our young and handsome pianist….
